Delphinium

Delphinium takes its name from the Latin word "delphis" which stands for ‘dolphin’ from the shape of the buds. The pronunciation of its name is del-FINNY-um. The plant is usually related to larkspur that is much smaller and has a lot of pastel shades, for instance, pink one.

It is very important to know about poisonous nature of delphinium. Being a poisonous plant at the same time it got used in herbal medicine. The Delphinium is the member of the Ranunculaceae family, including more than 300 species of flowers which are inhabitants of the northern hemisphere.

This plant is widely utilized as great filler in floral arrangements and various designs.

By the way, its juice mixed with alum make up blue ink.

The majority of this species are available any time of the year from different sources (domestic and international breeders and growers). The flower’s colors are blue, lavender, purple, white, salmon and yellow. If it is cut out its life lasting is about one- two weeks. However it should be cared and handled in a proper way. Delphiniums' vase life ranges from 7-14 days, depending on care-and-handling practices.

As the majority of other flowers delphinium has its own meaning that is ‘flight of fancy, ardent attachment’.
